Wow. Hard to believe I let it go this long, I used to love blogging so much. I've been feeling the itch again though, and thanks to Pinterest, this blog still gets regular page views. I think a serious overhaul is in order.<br />
<br />
I do have another website, and on-line shop so there is a chance that I might install some sort of re-direct. But photos, and the occasional tutorial will happen.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, do you have any suggestions or requests for content?<br />
<br />
And lastly, here is a recent photo of Wednesday, two years after my last Wednesday on Wednesday post and a week before her 7th birthday.<br />
<br />

Sometimes I have craft fails so big I scrap the entire process and move on. And sometimes I know I can do it and I either unpick my stitches or I go and buy more material(s). The case of the rufflebum onesies was the latter.
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7832159622/" title="rufflebum-light-pink by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="rufflebum-light-pink" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8300/7832159622_5ce0f26caf_z.jpg" width="500" /></a></center>
<br />
This is the finished product I had in my head. Pretty fantastic right? I think so, with the pink satin ribbon with sparkly white polka dots this onesie is made of nothing but cute!<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7832153822/" title="rufflebum-onesie-tester by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="rufflebum-onesie-tester" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8298/7832153822_fd3f7b7cc8.jpg" width="500" /></a></center>
<br />
But this is how the first one turned out. Tres horrible! My stitches were set to so high I ran out of ribbon. My tenstion was so high that I chewed holes in the knit fabric and I thought I had to stretch the onesie during stitching so the back of the stitching is overly wonky.<br />
I was heartbroken. I couldn't figure out where I went wrong at first. But after pulling out the last row, readjusting all my stitch settings it properly stitched.<br />
I also figured out that ruffles this 'ruffly' needed to be made out of ribbon that was double sided at least in colour. So much of the white backing on the patterned ribbon took away from the pretty paisley print.<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7832156550/" title="rufflebum-onesie-light-pink by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="rufflebum-onesie-light-pink" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7275/7832156550_fb2afed438.jpg" width="375" /></a></center>
<br />
So I went back to the dept. store and bought another onesie and a better ribbon choice and went at it again. It worked! I made not just this adorable bum but another!<br />
<br />
<center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7832152582/" title="rufflebum-dk-pink by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="rufflebum-dk-pink" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8442/7832152582_ff865e1eb0.jpg" width="500" /></a></center>
<br />
Not only did I create two gorgeous onesies for a customer but I fell in love with my ruffler foot all over again.<br />
<br />
Sometimes, you just need to listen to what your sewing machine is telling you. ♥Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-18404815254926668022012-08-15T16:23:00.004-04:002012-08-15T16:23:53.543-04:00Wednesday on Wednesday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I have been so busy with Wednesday, summer and <a href="http://modernwednesday.indiemade.com/store">the shoppe</a> that I hadn't taken Wednesday out for her five year photos yet. So last week when I made her a new dress and managed to get her hair into a presentable hair style I took her out for a great little shoot.<br />
Isn't she just huge though?! Where has my baby gone? Can you believe she starts Senior Kindergarten this year?! *sigh*<br />
But, with school starting again in a couple weeks expect posting to take a more regular turn. I have been creating though! I've just been trying to focus my efforts on growing Modern Wednesday.
<br />
I hope you're enjoying your summer as much as we are! ♥<br />

Hey folks! Sorry I have been MIA lately, but as you can see we have been gearing up for Wednesday's FIFTH birthday party! So excited! As soon as that craziness has subsided I will be back to regular posting! This little girl finished her first year of school (junior Kindergarten) yesterday. Amazing isn't it?! She's also turning five in a couple of weeks. I am hoping for a super fun summer. Not too much standing still. Do you have any super duper plans for the summer?</div>Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-67065387093436472642012-06-13T20:16:00.001-04:002012-06-13T20:16:52.720-04:00Wednesday on Wednesday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ei029zZQcBs/T9kro2iujQI/AAAAAAAABLI/z9jVZ3DBiUw/s1600/562288_10151153698874505_2086272746_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ei029zZQcBs/T9kro2iujQI/AAAAAAAABLI/z9jVZ3DBiUw/s400/562288_10151153698874505_2086272746_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
My poor little baby got her first black eye a couple days ago. She bounced off of another little girl at the splash pad and then bounced off the concrete. The whole thing was just awful. At first I was in shock and couldn't believe how black it was that quickly, but my mom reassured me it was just a black eye. Not a bruise with a hematoma on a bruise with another bruise on top. (Which is what my brain was working towards.) After lots of ice, freezies, popcorn, Tylenol and the all important Daddy, Wednesday was in good spirits.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cgIBDGxkm4M/T9kskVxY04I/AAAAAAAABLQ/JfWpE0l0vRk/s1600/Belleville-20120612-00121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-cgIBDGxkm4M/T9kskVxY04I/AAAAAAAABLQ/JfWpE0l0vRk/s400/Belleville-20120612-00121.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It looked even worse (which I did not think possible) yesterday. The swelling moved up closer to her eye and the bruise turned a raspberry colour. I was on the verge of horrified every time I looked at her. It is much better today, the colour already draining and a lot of the swelling has gone down.<br />
<br />
Just so darn awful though. When she's sick I can dote on her, when she is sad I can make her happy, when she is scared I can comfort her. I felt (feel) helpless with this though. I just have to wait it out with her I guess. Poor baby.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-16419477757278579182012-06-11T23:58:00.000-04:002012-06-12T07:09:58.127-04:00How To: Fitted Front Girl's SkirtYou know what I love about sewing? Everything. And it is a lot like riding a bike. You really never forget how, and you might even be better than the last time. That is why when I made another pretty little skirt for Wednesday it whizzed by, even with photos for a tutorial.<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7363932940/" title="Ikea-print-flat-panel-skirt-front by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="Ikea-print-flat-panel-skirt-front" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7232/7363932940_aa25a512ab.jpg" width="375" /></a>
</center><center>Front View<br />
The reason this simple skirt design is so wonderful is that while the front waistband sits comfortably underneath the little belly that little kids have,it doesn't ride up over the bubble bum.<br/>
</center><center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7178707103/" title="Ikea-print-flat-panel-skirt-gathered-back by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="Ikea-print-flat-panel-skirt-gathered-back" height="500" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5455/7178707103_f19c338d20.jpg" width="375" /></a>
<br />Back View
<br/>That's right, this skirt is actually longer in the back than in the front.</br>
</center>
After making <a href="http://untilwednesdaycalls.blogspot.ca/2012/05/sunshine-patchwork-skirt.html">Wednesday's Sunshine Skirt</a> last week, I realized that without the patchwork the skirt was a super simple pattern. So today when I decided to make another one I wanted it to be light and simple for summer wear so this boldly coloured Ikea print was perfect.<br />
<br />
Do you know what is not like riding a bike? Writing sewing tutorials. Forgive me i I rush through this, it was just so simple that I wasn't sure how many photo it required. Please do not hesitate to ask me any questions!<br />
<br />
Alright! Here we go! Collect your supplies.<br />
<br />
(2) Rectangles of fabric 19 x 15 inches<br />
1" No twist elastic<br />
Coordinating thread<br />
Sewing Machine<br />
Bodkin (or safety pin)<br />
<br />
Let's begin!<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7178708531/" title="Step-2-and-3-fold-over-top. by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="Step-2-and-3-fold-over-top." height="276" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5040/7178708531_9de274aedc.jpg" width="500" /></a> </center>Step 1. Cut your rectangles 19" x 15"<br />
Step 2. Fold fabric over 1/2" and press.<br />
Step 3. Fold fabric over again 1.25-1.5" and press.<br />
Do this for both pieces.<br />
<br />
<center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7178708093/" title="Step-4-and-5-sew-and-cut by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="Step-4-and-5-sew-and-cut" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7086/7178708093_236832e151.jpg" width="500" /></a></center><br />
Step 4. On BOTH pieces sew close to the pressed old.<br />
Step 5. On just ONE piece (The one you want to be the front.) cut on an angle from the bottom corner to three inches IN from the corner. Make sure that the angled sides are not longer than the straight sides of your second piece. (You'll see what I mean in the next photo.)<br />
<br />

I couldn't resist snapping a picture of Wednesday in this vintage hand-me-down sweater and her hot pink Chuck Taylors' (So jealous!) with the knee high socks and the basketball she looks straight out of an old photograph. ♥Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-1502135545600216652012-06-04T18:26:00.000-04:002012-06-04T18:32:44.223-04:00Recycled Leather Ruffle SkirtOne more entry into <a href="http://www.crafterhoursblog.com/2012/05/announcing-skirt-week-2012.html" target="_blank">The Crafterhours Skirt Week 2012 contest</a>. This time, it is something for mama! I am so excited to share this with you!<br />

I love the simple colour blocking in the front and the feminine ruffles at the back.</center><center><br /></center><center>

I have been <strike>hoarding</strike> saving these two jackets for some time now. At first I was going to make a handbag (or three) but I think they were put to much better use don't you?</center><center><br /></center><center><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7339010596/" title="leather-skirt-front-back-clip by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="leather-skirt-front-back-clip" height="333" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7073/7339010596_96ea1735d6.jpg" width="500" /></a> </center><center>When I began the skirt, I just took pieces of the jackets and clipped them to each other with alligator clips on my sewing dummy. I was going to do a sort of peplum detail at the front but I haven't the knowledge or skill set to make it work. I'm glad I didn't push it.</center><center><br /></center><center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7339008536/" title="back-detail by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="back-detail" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8004/7339008536_a2c7c848af.jpg" width="500" /></a> </center><center>This (the yoke/shoulders of the black jacket)was originally going to be the front, but it had too much of a 'western' look to it. After it was sewn down I realized two well placed darts would have worked well, but because I didn't do them I was able to reverse the skirt. The points fit perfectly at the back.</center><center><br /></center><center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7338561240/" title="leather-skirt-ruffle by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="leather-skirt-ruffle" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7101/7338561240_92e3fa7012.jpg" width="500" /></a> </center><center>I broke three or four needles gathering these ruffles by hand.</center><center><br /></center><center>

I sewed it at the top of the invisible zipper fly and snap (I cannot stand a zipper flap that won't stay closed at the very top!)</center><center>

This skirt is on of those things. I made it as an Easter gift for Wednesday but I loved it so much I made a second and sold it at <a href="http://modernwednesday.indiemade.com/" target="_blank">Modern Wednesday</a> a couple weeks ago. I absolutely had to enter it in the Crafterhours Skirt Week contest.<br />

From the moment I began creating since her birth. First scrapbooking and then sewing. So when I am in between creative bursts I look to her for inspiration. Last week I asked her what sort of skirt she would like next. She replied with a simple "Sunshine skirt."<br />
<br />
At first I thought maybe I could do some applique work, use up some vintage ribbons and such but after a couple of hours of cutting and placing it.just.wouldn't.work. I decided to stop forcing it. Packed up the cut pieces and watched Sherlock. The next morning I woke up and was instantly inspired. I set to work after getting Wednesday off to school and by noon I had finished this little number. And so I present my second entry into the <a href="http://www.crafterhoursblog.com/2012/05/announcing-skirt-week-2012.html" target="_blank">Crafterhours Skirt Week 2012 contest</a>.<br />

Made up of remnants from vintage sheets, new and vintage pillowcases and new(ish) yardage it is the sunniest skirt I have made.</center><center><br /></center><center>
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/gone-away/7308723102/" title="sunshine-skirt by Cara.Mia, on Flickr"><img alt="sunshine-skirt" height="500" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7083/7308723102_64c6527531.jpg" width="375" /></a></center><center>It fit Wednesday like a dream with room to both play and grow.</center><center><br /></center><center>

I had a luncheon date on the weekend and when Wednesday saw me in a white dress and pink heels, she had to dress the same. I wish we had gotten a better photo, but this one warms my heart.<br />

<a href="http://cdn.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/2006/researchersd.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://cdn.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/2006/researchersd.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: xx-small;"><a href="http://phys.org/news84027776.html" target="_blank">Source</a> </span></i></div>
<br />
You know what I love? Hummingbirds. Really though, who doesn't? Satan maybe. Ooh, and the bugs they eat. Still, I think we (those of us with opposable thumbs and the ability to read) can agree that hummingbirds make us smile. While I was standing on my deck this morning I realized I had nary a feeder and while I was at Wal-Mart I realized that I did not enjoy the plastic sort.<br />
<br />
So for our (mostly mine) own benefit I rounded up a few very pretty DIY options. And because most o them require hummingbird feeder tubes I sourced both <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ET6RUO/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=untiwedncall-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000ET6RUO" target="_blank">packs of twelve</a> and <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055PFRMQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=untiwedncall-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0055PFRMQ" target="_blank">single tubes</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.shabbybeachnest.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Earth_Day_Plastic_Bottle_Plastic_Spoons_Hummingbird_Feeder_Upcycle_Pic_6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://www.shabbybeachnest.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/Earth_Day_Plastic_Bottle_Plastic_Spoons_Hummingbird_Feeder_Upcycle_Pic_6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
Isn't this just the prettiest? Made from a plastic bottle and several plastic spoons. Visit <a href="http://www.shabbybeachnest.com/plastic-spoon-bottle-hummingbird-feeder/" target="_blank">The Shabby Beach Nest</a> for the tutorial. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
A glass bottle, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037N1WA4/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=untiwedncall-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0037N1WA4" target="_blank">copper tubing</a> and a feeder tube come together to make this gorgeous number from <a href="http://www.birdsandblooms.com/Birds/Hummingbirds/Hummingbird--DIY-Projects/DIY-Hummingbird-Feeder" target="_blank">Birds and Blooms</a>. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Pretty glass beads on recycled clear glass bottles come together or this feeder from <a href="http://thinkcrafts.com/blog/2010/10/05/how-to-make-a-hummingbird-feeder/" target="_blank">Think Crafts</a>.</div>

<span style="text-align: -webkit-auto;">Skirt Week is upon us again and it just so happens I have a few entries for this year's contest, so bear with me as I publish a couple of posts tooting my own horn.</span>

Front view. This skirt is made from two of my very favourite vintage sheets in my stash.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CuGPQ9TiATw/T8LnkYNPPSI/AAAAAAAABG4/AllaojbZB9o/s1600/ruffle+bum+aqua+tulle+detail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CuGPQ9TiATw/T8LnkYNPPSI/AAAAAAAABG4/AllaojbZB9o/s320/ruffle+bum+aqua+tulle+detail.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The skirt does have a soft lining with an attached aqua tulle peek-a-boo ruffle.

The back of the skirt has four rows ruffles that I double sided - narrow hemmed myself before ruffling.<br />

But I have a great excuse! I have been creating, but with a different purpose than usual! *drumroll please*<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-srTtDzQtp7c/T758l6J9lvI/AAAAAAAABE8/g6-CZcOewXk/s1600/Modern-Wednesday-Indie-Made.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="81" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-srTtDzQtp7c/T758l6J9lvI/AAAAAAAABE8/g6-CZcOewXk/s400/Modern-Wednesday-Indie-Made.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I have opened a shop! It is technically an online shop called <a href="http://www.modernwednesday.com/" target="_blank">Modern Wednesday</a> but all of my sales have been local (semi) custom orders. So it has been an exciting couple of months. And let me tell you, nothing gets the creative juices flowing like a sense of purpose! Would you like to see a couple items from my shop? Awesome!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pretty snazzy stuff isn't it! Some of it you might even recognize them from old tutorials and pictures. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is three times those listings at the shop though. Also, I have galleries set up of my favourite projects that I encourage people to order custom made projects. Remember my very first sewing project ever? <a href="http://untilwednesdaycalls.blogspot.ca/2009/08/bean-bag-fun.html" target="_blank">The bean bags</a>? Well, someone ordered a set of eight as <a href="http://modernwednesday.indiemade.com/gallery/image/handmade-felt-bean-bag-sensory-toys" target="_blank">sensory toys for her son with Autism</a>. Remember Wednesday's <a href="http://untilwednesdaycalls.blogspot.ca/2010/01/reversible-adjustable-felt-crown.html" target="_blank">felt crown</a>? Well I made the <a href="http://modernwednesday.indiemade.com/gallery/image/willows-crown" target="_blank">prettiest girly version</a> of it this week for another custom order.</div>
<br />
I chose Indiemade to host my website and shop because it was an all inclusive flat rate price that includes hosting, design and a shopping platform. I can have up to 13 galleries with unlimited photos within. I can list up to 100 items in my shop at a time and there is no commission for Indiemade. The biggest selling point for me though was that customers DO NOT NEED an account to shop at my shoppe! I love that. Believe it or not, a lot of people in my life do not shop within Etsy's 'borders'. Some don't even know what 'an Etsy' is. So I didn't see the point in complicating the process for my local customers all the while giving my customers access to my competition.<br />
That being said, I have an <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/modernwednesday?ref=si_shop" target="_blank">Etsy storefront</a>, I just haven't decided how to divvy up my listings between the two. Suggestions?<br />
<br />
I also have a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/ModernWednesday" target="_blank">Facebook fan page</a> for those of you that would like to follow for sneak peaks and discounts! I update regularly with 'In The Making' photos as well as 'In The Shoppe' photos.<br />
<br />
So there you have it. That is what has been eating up all my spare time. When I am not playing mom and homemaker I am playing maker and shopkeeper. I like my new hat(s). I have not given up on this blog, I swear I just have to find a balance because <a href="http://www.storagegeek.com/" target="_blank">Storage Geek</a> is still going strong as well. I'm nearly at 30,000 readers! So lots of stuff here, all awesome.<br />
<br />
Cheers!<br />

Wednesday and I went for our very first Mommy-Daughter salon visit. Wednesday got a trim, straighten and the fuchsia that Daddy has been promising her. She also sprayed me down with the shampoo hose by accident. That was awesome, thank goodness we were the last ones in the shop.</div>Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-67746260142470477132012-04-25T13:57:00.002-04:002012-04-25T13:57:09.896-04:00Wednesday on Wednesday<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Pretty as a picture isn't it? And it came together so fast I just had to share the how to! It mostly consists of a pinwheel primer (in case you have never made a single one in grade school. Seriously though, how did you let that happen?)<br />
<br />
Get together your supplies which consist of:<br />
1 wreath form<br />
6 squares of felt (4)4" squares and (2)5.5" squares<br />
3 Buttons<br />
Enough lace and/or ribbon to wrap around the wreath<br />
Rotary knife or scissors<br />
Glue gun & sticks (But a needle and thread can be used in its stead)<br />
<br />
Here are the super simple steps!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hCiz_PedoDw/T5a9zooC99I/AAAAAAAABAQ/hB0FJF3gtyY/s1600/cut-square-of-felt.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hCiz_PedoDw/T5a9zooC99I/AAAAAAAABAQ/hB0FJF3gtyY/s320/cut-square-of-felt.png" width="320" /></a></div>
1. Lay out your squares of felt and layer them two to a pile. (I love the contrasting colours of each wheel.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TpyRSkiDe40/T5a9v5I1ZlI/AAAAAAAABAI/T33MLbxs8e4/s1600/cut-corners-to-almost-cente.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-TpyRSkiDe40/T5a9v5I1ZlI/AAAAAAAABAI/T33MLbxs8e4/s320/cut-corners-to-almost-cente.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. Find the centre and using a rotary knife or scissors, cut to almost the center.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vdGaROWa4vg/T5a93L61KoI/AAAAAAAABAY/0t4ZyrXNH2Y/s1600/glue-corners-to-center-of-p.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-vdGaROWa4vg/T5a93L61KoI/AAAAAAAABAY/0t4ZyrXNH2Y/s320/glue-corners-to-center-of-p.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. Add glue to the centre and fold over one piece and affix. Your back layer might reach the centre but probably won't. I folded both pieces at the same time but had to add a bit of glue to the bottom layer and the point sat just outside the centre. (Don't worry though, the button will cover it.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0a1Xi88TPBY/T5a9rgJNOUI/AAAAAAAABAA/s8isPOMK9aM/s1600/Folded-pinwheel-corners.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0a1Xi88TPBY/T5a9rgJNOUI/AAAAAAAABAA/s8isPOMK9aM/s320/Folded-pinwheel-corners.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. Continue with all four corners until your pinwheel looks like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LFvG0Np7R3Q/T5a9kIPZfsI/AAAAAAAAA_w/fwuVBlSY9Z0/s1600/Finished-Felt-Pinwheel.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-LFvG0Np7R3Q/T5a9kIPZfsI/AAAAAAAAA_w/fwuVBlSY9Z0/s320/Finished-Felt-Pinwheel.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. Glue button to centre.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5cnhtLCtHNk/T5a96ZH7XxI/AAAAAAAABAg/EZbMDSlEKRs/s1600/pretty-felt-pinwheels.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5cnhtLCtHNk/T5a96ZH7XxI/AAAAAAAABAg/EZbMDSlEKRs/s400/pretty-felt-pinwheels.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. Rinse and repeat for the next two pinwheels. Aren't they just adorable?!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NuW6GQiaxOs/T5a9gyIwFHI/AAAAAAAAA_o/-fXyHHx4UrQ/s1600/Arrange-lace.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NuW6GQiaxOs/T5a9gyIwFHI/AAAAAAAAA_o/-fXyHHx4UrQ/s320/Arrange-lace.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Pull out your wreath for and do a lace/ribbon mock up. I scavenged some lace from my jars for this. I actually used four different pieces so I wanted to make sure they would all fit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NIQEdstmjYk/T5a9-efW8qI/AAAAAAAABAo/7ikQzSXWD_8/s1600/wrap-and-glue-lace.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NIQEdstmjYk/T5a9-efW8qI/AAAAAAAABAo/7ikQzSXWD_8/s320/wrap-and-glue-lace.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. Glue ends (if you have multiple pieces)and wrap evenly.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWvZwXm-uNU/T5a9nzaLLZI/AAAAAAAAA_4/7LUKL0itgl0/s1600/Finshed-Wreath.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fWvZwXm-uNU/T5a9nzaLLZI/AAAAAAAAA_4/7LUKL0itgl0/s400/Finshed-Wreath.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
9. Glue your pinwheels on and you are done! Now hang that baby and brighten your mood!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

The skirt was one of Wednesday's Easter presents. It was a long overdue requested "rainbow skirt" number. It is made from a combination of vintage sheets, new yardage, thrifted scarf and vintage trims. It was so much fun to make I am making another for sell. I hope your weekend was as beautiful and fun filled as ours! Cheers!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-83660044919969603122012-04-04T09:17:00.000-04:002012-04-04T09:17:05.700-04:00Wednesday on WednesdayIt is that time of year again. The time when Wednesday drives me bananas until she gets to dye some eggs. So yesterday I obliged. I had hopes of doing the <a href="http://www.heyjenrenee.com/2011/04/kool-eggs.html?spref=fb" target="_blank">Kool-Aid method</a> but my local Wal-Mart didn't sell the individual packs. I have done the food colouring with vinegar method and it did work but I felt you needed to leave the eggs in the bath too long or vivid colours. (Little ones need instant gratification.) So, I wandered over to the easter decorating section and found <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0058HAXY8/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=untiwedncall-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B0058HAXY8" target="_blank">Dudley's Egg Decorating Kit</a>. I had two criteria; bright vivid colours and our year old friendly processes. (Some kits called for smushing the egg in a bag of glitter etc.). This kit delivered. Super cheap and super bright colours and the girls loved it.<br />

What are some of your Easter traditions? Do you pay special attention to the religious reasons for the holiday? Do you have a child obsessed with dyeing eggs like me? However you celebrate I hope your Easter is magical.<br />

(Since pre-Christmas I believe.) Good and bad excuses aside, I have some wonderful photos to share today. Last week we had some seriously unseasonable and amazing weather here in South Eastern Ontario. It was summer weather. We were out in shorts, and flip flops for the better part of the week. Before the weather could return to the seasonal cold and wet temperatures, I managed to whisk Wednesday off to the park for some sunshine, fun and photos.<br />

Now it is back to raincoats, boots and mittens. What a glorious week it was though. I hope your spring is coming up daffodils!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15318966183032998930noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6054451010567466590.post-27453933635903272572012-03-27T10:44:00.000-04:002012-03-27T10:44:01.889-04:00How To : Recycled Denim Coil Basket<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H_IZ7gAn4Ic/T3HGYOAhVVI/AAAAAAAAA4A/q_Sqt-OeBlQ/s1600/denim-bowl.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H_IZ7gAn4Ic/T3HGYOAhVVI/AAAAAAAAA4A/q_Sqt-OeBlQ/s400/denim-bowl.png" width="300" /></a></div>I am slowly making my way back to crafting and posting...lately I have been mostly crafting and I am ok with that. Must be the weather? Well, this little number was inspired by two completely separate projects. The first being the coiled basket I made from torn vintage sheets and a pair of jeans I refashioned. I thought enough ahead to take process photos, so I have a tutorial for you today! I haven't had one since before Christmas, wow some holiday eh?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PRdOKIhLpXk/T3HHMgt2ycI/AAAAAAAAA4I/36bdeNyaR4E/s1600/1.1Denim-Scraps.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="183" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PRdOKIhLpXk/T3HHMgt2ycI/AAAAAAAAA4I/36bdeNyaR4E/s400/1.1Denim-Scraps.png" width="400" /></a></div>Behold the scrap denim drawer. A collection of remnants from <a href="http://www.flickr.com/search/?w=7581080@N03&q=denim#page=0" target="_blank">past projects</a> and full pieces I have yet to utilize including two pairs of untouched jeans, a jacket and a mini skirt. I took out a bag of inseams and cuffs I had separated and began the project. Within just a couple of hours I had this basket, which has a seven inch diameter at the base and a twelve inch diameter at the top. The basket is nine inches high.<br />
<br />
<i><b>To make your own you will need:</b></i><br />
Inseams and hems from several pairs of jeans<br />
Waistband from one pair of jeans for handles (optional)<br />
Back pocket from one pair of jeans (also optional)<br />
Hot glue gun and a couple sticks of glue<br />
Sewing machine<br />
Denim needles (or size 14) more than two and denim has a tendency to warp needles.<br />
One large spool of thread + two or three matching wound bobbins<br />
<br />
<b><i>Begin at the beginning...</i></b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SLCtACfDDIg/T3HHXAoxFBI/AAAAAAAAA4g/bxSAS1ouUxE/s1600/1Begin-coil.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SLCtACfDDIg/T3HHXAoxFBI/AAAAAAAAA4g/bxSAS1ouUxE/s320/1Begin-coil.png" width="320" /></a></div>Begin by taking a bottom hem piece and coiling it around itself. Adding hot glue along the seam as you roll. Don'y mind if the glue seeps out a bit as the arrows are showing it is hardly noticeable.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6lxwxn0MDYU/T3HHawiXenI/AAAAAAAAA4o/BByCfBn6H7o/s1600/2Finished-coil.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-6lxwxn0MDYU/T3HHawiXenI/AAAAAAAAA4o/BByCfBn6H7o/s320/2Finished-coil.png" width="320" /></a></div>Continue adding pieces to your coil until it is a size you like (or you run out of hem pieces like I did.) As you can see I chose to keep the lumpier pieces where the hem and the seams met. You can leave them out for a smoother coil but I found by staggering them around the circle it all evened out in the end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ol7axWQMzDE/T3HHem0vNUI/AAAAAAAAA4w/MFr9SNwMA8c/s1600/3Add-an-outside-ring.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ol7axWQMzDE/T3HHem0vNUI/AAAAAAAAA4w/MFr9SNwMA8c/s320/3Add-an-outside-ring.png" width="320" /></a></div>When you have finished coiling your base, add a piece of denim that is taller than the coils. Here I used a hem from a pair of men's shorts I had. But you can use a piece of denim cut to size. It is just to give your basket wall coils something to attach to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BSTokHTcuHQ/T3HHhx3Y80I/AAAAAAAAA44/CRT9eUbiK1g/s1600/4Tip-to-sew.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BSTokHTcuHQ/T3HHhx3Y80I/AAAAAAAAA44/CRT9eUbiK1g/s320/4Tip-to-sew.png" width="240" /></a></div>Tip up your base so that the taller piece you added to the outside meets up with inseam piece under your presser foot exactly in the middle. Close up pictured below.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FVGWQirNl3c/T3HHlJ0MAGI/AAAAAAAAA5A/4AkujQw1Dxs/s1600/5Begin-side-coils.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FVGWQirNl3c/T3HHlJ0MAGI/AAAAAAAAA5A/4AkujQw1Dxs/s320/5Begin-side-coils.png" width="320" /></a></div>See how the base is under the presser foot as well as the first inseam piece? You need them to meet in the middle because you are going to use your widest zig zag stitch to join them together. Back stitch a couple stitches and big stitching.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obzO7n8IP-8/T3HHoTxxvnI/AAAAAAAAA5I/UZxnfuk3krA/s1600/6second-row-side-coil.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-obzO7n8IP-8/T3HHoTxxvnI/AAAAAAAAA5I/UZxnfuk3krA/s320/6second-row-side-coil.png" width="320" /></a></div>When you have sewn your first coil around the base you will need to CONTINUOUSLY stitch up to the second row. Simply move your coil so that it crosses the bottom and begins a second row on its own.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkkuQscYwuM/T3HHsVVMXOI/AAAAAAAAA5Q/P3W9t5sq4q4/s1600/7adding-new-pieces.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fkkuQscYwuM/T3HHsVVMXOI/AAAAAAAAA5Q/P3W9t5sq4q4/s320/7adding-new-pieces.png" width="240" /></a></div>When it is time to add another piece of inseam you just slide it under your foot and continue stitching. You might have to fiddle with it a little bit. And sometimes it might not line up perfectly, but for me it added to the charm. YOu might just need to go slower than I did. (I got more and more excited the closer I got to the end of the project.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c86lsnn8WCE/T3HHwuDWjeI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/lqn3cNO0-ew/s1600/8holes-are-ok.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-c86lsnn8WCE/T3HHwuDWjeI/AAAAAAAAA5Y/lqn3cNO0-ew/s320/8holes-are-ok.png" width="320" /></a></div>See? Holes. But I was okay with them. What I wasn't okay with was big holes between coil rows. So when I was done the basket I went back and sewed up any places that my zig zag stitched missed. (Glue would also work as there was one row that broke two needles on me before I just accepted it and moved on.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PhJbixBVEr8/T3HHziU3wTI/AAAAAAAAA5g/wjIaCaggsw0/s1600/9straight-stitch-handles.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PhJbixBVEr8/T3HHziU3wTI/AAAAAAAAA5g/wjIaCaggsw0/s320/9straight-stitch-handles.png" width="320" /></a></div>For the handles I just snipped a couple pieces from a waistband and straight stitched them on. (The machine did not enjoy trying to zig zag stitch throw two+ layers of denim)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-RGrHVyaxk/T3HHPZmV5mI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/1a4Q-lWF35Y/s1600/10stitch-on-pocket.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P-RGrHVyaxk/T3HHPZmV5mI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/1a4Q-lWF35Y/s320/10stitch-on-pocket.png" width="320" /></a></div>Because I wasn't going to sew this pocket on, I wanted to give it some stitch detail first. I like the royal blue stitching against the bright black denim.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0TEOsmnDuks/T3HHTbDIX0I/AAAAAAAAA4Y/4WnUIGfcSg4/s1600/11glue-pocket.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0TEOsmnDuks/T3HHTbDIX0I/AAAAAAAAA4Y/4WnUIGfcSg4/s320/11glue-pocket.png" width="320" /></a></div>Choose a side for your pocket (I chose the one that had one too many iffy spots) and affix with hot glue.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Vl4M62xbfI/T3HRdtsze6I/AAAAAAAAA5w/7x2uuQe7V6Q/s1600/filled-basket.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3Vl4M62xbfI/T3HRdtsze6I/AAAAAAAAA5w/7x2uuQe7V6Q/s320/filled-basket.png" width="320" /></a></div>You are done. Now fill it with stuff and enjoy!<br />
